What triggers vertigo attacks?

If you've ever felt like you were on a carousel while you were just walking down the street, or even sitting still, then you probably suffer from vertigo. While there are many causes for vertigo, the most common are inner ear infections and BPPV (benign paroxysmal positional vertigo). BPPV causes a brief feeling of dizziness when moving your head, and it happens due to calcium accumulation in your inner ears' canals.

Another cause is vestibular neuritis, a consequence of an inner ear infection that causes inflammation around the nerves responsible for your body's sense of balance. People suffering from this condition will likely heal fast and possibly never experience it again.

Vertigo is not acrophobia

Although most people associate vertigo with being afraid of heights, that's not even remotely accurate. Acrophobia is an extreme or irrational fear of heights, different from vertigo, which consists in feeling like you are moving, when, in fact, you are not. Vertigo can even bring along symptoms of dizziness and induce vomit.

The source for all this confusion comes from the Alfred Hitchcock's movie "Vertigo," in which the main character was suffering from a fear of heights, meaning she had acrophobia and not vertigo.

Is walking good for vertigo?

If you are feeling symptoms of vertigo, we highly recommend you seek our help and receive proper treatment for dizziness in Saskatoon. Only after seeking our medical opinion, can you use walking exercises as an option to keep fighting vertigo.

Since walking is a powerful exercise that helps your balance, it subsequently becomes a good exercise if you suffer from vertigo as well. Walking will also work your muscles, helping you to keep muscle tone and increase strength. However, if you are prone to falls, you should walk with the help of some support system, like a wall or a cane, or just have someone with you.

These exercises will help you to grade your current vertigo state, as well as to track your progress. The next time you go on a walk, after you have taken a couple of steps, stop abruptly. You will likely experience vertigo symptoms, so wait until they go away. Repeat this exercise for about 30 meters (100 feet).
